Illegal Casinos on the Rise in Canada
With gambling is legal in Canada, it is fairly easy to find an excellent brick-and-mortar casino or poker room to visit. While some regions have less options in the local area, this doesn’t really explain why underground gambling is on the rise. In fact, the recent exposure of an illegal casino in Richmond is a good example, since that area has plenty of casinos to choose from. So, why is the underground gambling scene so popular? And, what does this mean for us as players and for the casino industry in general?
in the Last month, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police discovered what they referred to as an illegal “beverage can”. They raided the buildings of a large 2-floor industrial space on Voyageur Way, Richmond, virginia, for finding the number of gambling tables and a large quantity of illicit liquor. At the time of the robbery there were about 20 customers on site in the age between 19 and 25 years old.
This clubhouse of sorts was reasonably well-equipped with mood lighting, karaoke machines and rooms of different size. A security camera network had been set up to monitor the main entrance of the premises.
The raid is part of a strict approach by the RCMP Anti-gang unit that a similar operation in October, but of a much smaller facility.
Cpl. Dennis Hwang said: “This drink can was much more extensive than the first, we discovered about a month ago. We are working on a number of reasons with the public safety in the forefront.”
“the security risks [are] attracting the criminal element, gambling, potential fire hazard/overpopulation, illegal beverage service and the potential road safety concerns with possible impaired driver leaving the machine”, he said further.
While the RCMP successfully raided 19 gambling/illegal liquor locations more than just a weekend, the public reaction is not an overly supportive. This type of activity has the potential to lead to heavier crime, and even violence. When there is an uncontrolled use of money, along with copious amounts of alcohol (and probably drugs), it can certainly get out of hand. However, some members of the public have criticized the RCMP to say that they should be focused on other, more malicious criminal activities.
What some people don’t take into account is that gambling on this kind of places is a big risk. There is absolutely no guarantee that the games are not rigged, or even if you win, you’ll be able to leave with your money. So why do people do it?
Well, there are a number of “benefits”. First of all, this is a direct way to avoid the tax on money earned from gambling. This is also a benefit for the illegal bookmakers because by avoiding tax, they are already earning more, and can afford to offer odds that are much better than those of legal points of sale.
secondly, there are no rules regarding betting formats or types. This means that there is no minimum bet amount and players can make use of something of value to to place wagers, not only money or chips. In illegal betting establishments it is not uncommon for players to place bets with the help of jewelry, cars or even drugs.
It is also likely that some players just like the underground “dangerous” element of gambling in places such as this. We strongly recommend you to avoid this type of establishment, and since there are a lot of great and reliable land-based casinos in Canada, there is really no reason to risk!
